The Joint Movement Committee (JMC), which has opposed the re-settlement of the Bru refugees in North Tripura, lifted its indefinite strike on Tuesday. The decision of the JMC was announced by its convenor, Sushanta Bikash Barua in the morning on Tuesday. Talking to Northeast Now on Tuesday morning over the phone, JMC convenor Sushanta Bikash Barua said, “We had a discussion with BJP MLA, Bhagaban Das last night.” “During the meeting, it was decided that state ministers and top-level officials will have discussions on our demands regarding the Bru refugees resettlement issue with us within one or two days,” Barua added. After the talk with the MLA last night, the executive members of JMC had another round of discussion among themselves on Tuesday morning. Barua said MLA Bhagaban Das requested them to lift the strike and join the talk table with ministers of the state. He said they are not against any community or people of Tripura but what they want is just to safeguard their own rights. On Monday till 5 pm, MLA Das had a six-hour-long meeting with the leaders of the Joint Movement Committee at Kanchanpur. After the meeting, Bhagaban Das conveyed the outcome of the meeting to the top leaders of the party and ministers after that it was decided to have another round of meeting at night. The JMC leaders remained adamant in their demands during the first round of meeting on Monday. They informed that they would continue their indefinite strike in Kanchanpur sub-division unless their demands are not fulfilled. They demanded that not more than 500 Bru families should be resettled in Kanchanpur sub-division. In view of the prevailing situation in Kanchanpur and Panisagar, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Verma cancelled their scheduled meeting with BJP president JP Nadda. The meeting was scheduled to take place in the BJP headquarters in Delhi on Monday. On Monday night, the Tripura government issued a statement regarding its stand on the Bru re-settlement issue. Two persons, including a civilian and a fire service employee, died during clashes between security personnel and protestors at Panisagar after the anti-Bru agitation turned violent. “It has come to the notice of the state government that fake news is being circulated in the social media that the displaced Bru migrants will settle only one part of Tripura,” the statement said. “It is hereby clarified by the state revenue department that as per the agreement signed between the government of India and all parties concerned, the government of Tripura has identified various locations spread across 6 districts of Tripura for the resettlement of the Brus,” it said. “Claims that the resettlement will take in any one district or subdivision are completely false. People should refrain from believing or sharing fake news being circulated by such persons or political groups with vested interest,” it further said.
