Four National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants, who were trained in Bangladesh, have surrendered before security forces in Tripura. The Bangladesh-trained militants, according to a media report, fled from a camp of the outfit in the neighbouring country on January 31. The NLFT cadres, who surrendered on Thursday, have been identified as Sethi Debbarma (20), Rajib Debbarma (18), Bisharam Reang Lalong (21) and Zawmina Reang (27). The report quoted a senior police official saying that they fled from their camp at Bagaichari under Rangamati district of Bangladesh on January 31, 2021. They are residents of three districts in Tripura. They are currently being interrogated by the top police officials. According to an official statement, during preliminary interrogation, it has come to light that the four cadres joined the outlawed outfit NLFT in 2018 and 2019. They received training in Bangladesh camp, police said. “The extremists told the police officials that they realised that their so called fight for independence of Tripura is totally a farce attempt and has no future prospect towards overall development of tribal people of the state,” the statement said. “Presently, the NLFT outfit has been facing serious financial and organisational crisis. They also got fed up with the group due to jhum cultivation (shifting farming) and other hard fatigue duties at the behest of their leaders who are enjoining luxurious lifestyles,” it added. The statement quoting the surrendered militants said: “Feelings frustrated with the present predicament of NLFT outfit and continuous pressures and motivation of Tripura Police, they joined the mainstream of the society.”
