Deb said the medicinal value of cannabis is known but no step had been taken to legalize its cultivation in Tripura till date.

The Tripura government will call experts to explore the possibility of legalising cannabis cultivation in the state to boost the rural economy, CM Biplab Kumar Deb said in the state assembly on Monday.

Replying to a query of BJP legislator Diba Chandra Hrangkhwal, Deb said medicinal value of cannabis is known but no step had been taken to legalize its cultivation in Tripura till date.

Hrangkhwal pointed out that a large number of people in rural areas have been involved in cannabis cultivation mostly in forest land for their livelihood.
“Many states have made it legal for supplying it to the pharmaceutical industry considering its medicinal value and involvement of the poor in its cultivation. Therefore, cannabis cultivation and production in Tripura needs to be legalised,” Hrangkhwal said.
