Tripura HC slams state government over false vaccination data, orders to release revised data

  • | Sunday | 11th July, 2021

Tripura High Court while hearing a PIL filed regarding the current situation of Covid-19 in the state has rejected the state government`s claim that Tripura sits on top in terms of vaccination in the country.

The Tripura High Court has sought an explanation from the state government for spreading false information about more than 80 per cent of eligible persons and 98 per cent of people above 45 years of age receiving the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. A suo motu case was heard by a bench of Chief Justice AA Qureshi and Justice Subhasish Talapatra after the state government filed a detailed affidavit before the high court.

Criticizing the government, the bench said, "The Court has laid stress on the credibility of public information from the outset, as we believe that such claims will be true only when the data provided by the state machinery is transparent and accurate and the public will have access to this information". "A responsible officer has given wrong information, so we are hopeful that he will now provide the revised information to the press", the court further said.

As of June 25, the total vaccine doses given to people above 45 years of age was 14.36 Lakhs. The second dose was given to 5.66 lakh people, most of whom were in this age group as vaccination for people below 45 years of age had started recently. Thus out of 12.36 lakh people above the age of 45 years, about 9 lakh were given the vaccine. It certainly does not fall in 98 percent of the population of that age group.
