NGO officials rescue 11-day-old baby who had been 'sold off'

AGARTALA: The 11-day-old baby who had allegedly been sold off by his mother for Rs 7,600 was rescued in Khowai on Friday night.Officials of Child Line , an NGO working across the country for destitute children, rescued the baby from the home of a childless couple. "We have asked both the biological parents as well as the adoptive parents to produce documents proving their statement in court so that the case can be settled," said Sharmistha Roy , a Child Line volunteer here. No case has been reported in the police station by either party, she added.Child Line officials said the baby has been brought to a government home, where he will be kept until his biological parents are identified. They added that she was burdened by expenses incurred due to the prolonged ailment of her husband, a daily labourer.

The matter has been referred to a local court and, hopefully, it would be heard next week, they said.The woman, who hails from a village under the Teliamura police station in West Tripura , had allegedly sold off her son for Rs 7,600 to raise money for the treatment of her ailing husband. The civil administration said it has taken up the initiative to bring back the child and treat the ailing father, but neither family has cooperated yet.
