10 people killed, 20 injured as truck carrying devotees overturns near Etawah

Etawah: At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured on Saturday as a truck carrying devotees overturned and fell into a 30-feet deep gorge near Badhepura in Uttar Pradesh`s Etawah district, police said. The devotees, who belong to the Pinahata village, were returning from Agra in the truck after visiting the Lakhna Devi temple. The truck, which was carrying at least 100 people, flipped after the driver lost control vehicle returning to Pinahata. The dead are yet to be identified, according to officials. Several women and children, who were inside the truck, were injured in the accident.

Police personnel along with local residents pulled out the injured using ropes tied to vehicles as ambulances gathered to take them to hospitals. The injured have been taken to Etawah District Hospital and Saifi Institute for treatment. They also pulled bodies from the gorge where the truck fell.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences. In a statement, Adityanath also announced ?200,000 ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased. The chief minister also instructed state government officials to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot also extended his condolences to the families of the victims. "Pained by the loss of lives in a tragic accident in Etawah Uttar Pradesh. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May they remain strong in this difficult time. Prayers for speedy recovery of those injured," Gehlot said in a tweet.
