Thousands of women tie Rakhi to brothers in west UP jails

AGRA: On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Aligarh and Muzaffarnagar jail authorities organized a meeting wherein women met their brothers in the jail premises and tied rakhi. The brothers vowed to stay away from committing crimes and lead their lives as good citizens once released.As part of the preparations for the meeting, a help desk was set up outside the jail so that women could get information. A team of deputy jailer rank officers was on duty to take care of visitors to the jail and avoid confusion and inconvenience to them. Bijendra Yadav, senior superintendent, of Aligarh jail said that as many as 2,020 women reached the premises. The jail administration formed a team that brought the brothers from the barracks to the meeting point. "My brother has been upset for the last several days. I tied him Rakhi and in return he promised that he would lead a simple life and not commit crime," a woman, on condition of anonymity, said. In Muzaffarnagar, jail superintendent, Sitaram Sharma said, "Women had started reaching the jail premises at 8 am. A number of Muslim women also tied Rakhi to their brothers. In total, 2,200 women met their jailed brothers and observed the festival." Jail administration in Muzaffarnagar, Hathras, Mainpuri, and many more also made special arrangements for sisters to meet their brothers. Meanwhile, jail minister, Dharmveer Prajapati, visited Agra jail and inspected the arrangements made by the authorities.
