Uttar Pradesh: Man gets 15 years in jail for rape in Muzaffarnagar

AGRA: A local court in Muzaffarnagar sentenced a 40-year-old man to 15 years in prison for raping a woman living in the same village. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused.Additional district government counsel, Kuldeep Singh, said on Sunday, "The incident happened in September 2018. During the night, when the woman was sleeping in her room, the accused entered her room. He grabbed her and tore her clothes before raping her."Upon hearing the survivors cries for help, her family members rushed to her aid and attempted to catch the assailant. However, the accused managed to escape.The victims family filed a police complaint, leading to the registration of a case under relevant sections, including Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The survivor told the police, and later the court, that she had been subjected to threats and repeated sexual assaults by the accused over the course of a year.District government counsel (DGC) Rajeev Sharma said, "After the incident, police completed the investigation in a few weeks and submitted the charge sheet in court under sections 376 (rape), 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.""After hearing both sides and examining the evidence and witnesses, the court of additional district and session judge Ritish Sachdeva on Saturday sentenced the accused to 15 years and a Rs 30,000 penalty in Section 375, five years and a Rs 20,000 penalty in Sections 452, 354B, and two years in Section 506 of the IPC. All punishments will run together."(The victims identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
