CBI arrests 4 CGST officials in Aligarh in bribery case

ALIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested four officials from the CGST (Goods and Services Tax) office in Aligarh, on charges of bribery amounting to Rs 25,000. The arrested officials include two superintendents, an inspector, and a tax assistant from the GST & Central Excise Division in Aligarh.The case originated from a complaint filed against two CGST officials in Aligarh. The complainant, an LIC agent, alleged that despite never having a firm registered in his name with GST, he had been consistently receiving notices from the CGST Department since 2021, demanding a sum of Rs 1.70 lakh.The complainant claimed that when he met both accused officials at the CGST office to address the notice, they demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 to resolve the matter.Following the complaint, the CBI conducted a sting operation. The tax assistant at the CGST office accepted the bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant and handed it over to an inspector. During the investigation, superintendents KP Singh and Rohit Kumar Varshney, inspector Pradeep Kumar, and tax assistant Sanchit were apprehended, and the bribe money was recovered.Searches were conducted at five locations, including premises associated with the accused, leading to the discovery of Rs 5 lakh in cash and pertinent documents. The CBI continues its investigation into the case.
