Over 300 AMU students fall ill due to food poisoning

AGRA: More than 300 students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) were rushed to hospital on Tuesday due to food poisoning after dinner on Sir Syed Day.The university administration removed the Begum Azeezun Nisa Hostel provost from her post and appointed Prof Asiya Chaudhry (department of commerce) in her place. A three-member committee will investigate the matter, said AMU proctor Mohammad Waseem Ali.A function was held at the university to mark the 206th birth anniversary of founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. After the event, a dinner was organised for all AMU students in the universitys 16 hostels.The women were served food at the Begum Azeezun Nisa Hostel and around midnight, several complained of stomach ache and vomiting. According to other students, when the condition of the women worsened late at night, they were admitted to the JN Medical College. When university officials received information about the incident, they rushed to the spot and an internal investigation was ordered. AMU proctor Ali said some of the affected students were given first-aid and sent back to their hostel and some were hospitalised. They are all out of danger.The students accused hostel authorities of mismanagement, alleging the dinner was held in a dirty place. A student, on condition of anonymity, said, "About 500 women got food poisoning but officials made silly excuses that they got sick due to overeating."Vania, a student who has been living in the hostel for three years, said, "We were served food on used plates. No one was bothered about hygiene."
