Agra power department officials suspended for bribery, negligence

AGRA: Two junior engineers in the Agra power department in UP have been suspended for accepting bribes from a farmer. In the meantime, two other officials, an executive engineer and a sub-division officer, were suspended for negligence in their supervisory roles.Managing director of Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (DVVNL), Amit Kishore, suspended two junior engineers (JEs), Saurabh Kumar and Hriday Kumar, after taking cognizance of a complaint filed by a farmer, Manoj Kumar Tyagi. The JEs were arrested on Thursday after an FIR was filed against them.Meanwhile, Fatehabad area executive engineer (EE) Prabhakar Singh and sub-division officer (SDO) Praveen Singh have also been suspended for negligence in overseeing the situation, sources in the power department told TOI. An internal investigation against the four has been ordered.On the other hand, two sub-inspectors and one constable of the vigilance department were also named in the FIR. But no action has been taken against them so far.According to sources in the power department, Manoj Kumar Tyagi, a resident of Mitiha village in the Iradatnagar police station area, had recently constructed a new house and applied for an electricity connection. During this period, Tyagi temporarily accessed electricity from his tubewell.On Tuesday, junior engineers Saurabh Kumar and Hriday Kumar, along with sub-inspectors Rajnesh Singh and Bijendra Singh, as well as head constable Sonu Pratap, comprising the enforcement team of DVVNL, conducted a raid after the power department received information regarding electricity theft.The DVVNL team made a video of electricity theft on the spot and started dealing by talking about filing a case. The accused demanded a bribe of Rs 80,000 from the farmer. Eventually, an agreement was reached to resolve the matter for Rs 35,000.Tyagi, however, made a complaint with DVVNL, and following MD Kishores instructions, an FIR was registered against the vigilance team, including the junior engineers, for soliciting a bribe in connection with an electricity theft case.
