‘Objective of madrassas is to strengthen education’

Agra: Prominent scholars from across the country participated in a one-day meeting of the working committee of "Raabta Madaris-e-Islamia" at the Islamic educational institution Darul Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur district. The meeting revolved around various proposals aimed at enhancing the utility of madrassas for the betterment of the country and its people, as well as improving the overall social system. During the meeting, ulemas of the Islamic seminary also expressed their concerns regarding the governments investigation of four thousand madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, deeming it worrisome. The SIT will be headed by a senior officer and will look into allegations of illegal entry of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas into India with the help of foreign funding received by some madrassas. The probe has revealed that around Rs 20 crore was received by these madrassas over a period of three years through a Delhi-based NGO.Ukhand madrassa manager held for exploiting minor studentsAn absconding manager of an unregistered madrassa in Uttarakhand was arrested for exploiting 26 girls aged between 4 and 16 years. The girls were found in a single room and were forced to do household chores. The manager had promised the parents to give the children a good education but instead made them work for the couple. The accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC and the Juvenile Justice Act. The children have been allowed to go home after counseling their parents.Uttar Pradesh govt forms 3-member SIT to probe funds madrassas received from abroadThe Uttar Pradesh government has set up a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate foreign funds received by madrassas in the state. The SIT, headed by an additional director general, will examine how the money is being used and whether it is being used for running madrassas or other activities. The focus will be on madrassas located in districts along the Indo-Nepal border. Both registered and unregistered madrassas will be included in the probe. This move comes after a survey found that thousands of unrecognised madrassas were operating in the state.
