Harassed by money lender, Aligarh man puts up ‘son is on sale’ banner

AGRA: A 45-year-old e-rickshaw driver, frequently harassed by a moneylender in Aligarh, tried to "sell" his minor son in a busy street by putting up a banner that read, My son on sale. Rajkumar, a father of an 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, sat on the citys Gandhi Park intersection with his wife and children and told some passersby that "he was ready to sell his son for Rs 5-6 lakh"."The moneylender often harassed and humiliated me in front of my kids.He even threw me and my family out of the house. My e-rickshaw, the only means of supporting my family, had been taken away. Ive been visiting the local police station for days for justice, but no FIR was registered," Rajkumar claimed. He had borrowed Rs 50,000 from Chandrapal Singh to buy property. The accused later turned him into a "borrower" and took away the land documents. "I managed to pay him Rs 6,000 and trying my best to pay the rest," he said.Taking cognisance of the widely-circulated video of the "protesting" family, police on Saturday arrested the accused and sent him to jail. Superintendent of police (SP) (City), Mrigank Pathak, said, "The incident took place on October 26. A case was registered at Mahuakhera police station the next day against the accused under IPC sections 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
