‘No madrassa registered in 8 years in UP, over 7 lakh students affected’

AGRA: Following last years extensive survey of madrassas in UP with the promise of better facilities by the state government, over 8,000 were found undocumented and around 5,000 of them applied for registration which remains pending since early 2016, leaving more than 7 lakh students educational future in a limbo, said UP Madrassa Board chairman, Iftikhar Ahmed Javed, on Thursday.Javed told TOI, None of the seminaries got accreditation from the Board so far. Over 5,000 (madrassa) applicants in the state are still waiting since the earlier government put a pause on the registration process about eight years ago.H igher officials at the Madrassa Board in Lucknow and at the minority welfare department should do more as the order is yet to be reversed, Javed added. Javed added that the delay is affecting the studies of 7.5 lakh students in 5,000 madrassas in the state, out of which over 90% are from the Pasmanda community (among the most backward). Seminaries are unable to provide proper certificates or recognised marksheets to students. The surveys aim was to uplift the educational standards in the unregularised madrassas by linking it with modern subjects and bring the children into the mainstream, the UP Madrassa Board chairman further pointed out. Uttar Pradesh secretary of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, Qari Zakir Husain, said, Applicants are running from pillar to post but no one is there to give them a satisfactory answer. Over the years, several applicants had approached the minority welfare department in their respective districts for registration. On the delay, Faizur Rahman, state coordinator of Muslim Pasmanda Manch, said, The government held a survey and are shortlisting the madrassas. Accreditation work will start in the coming months.
