AMU student shot in leg duringcelebratory firing

AGRA: A BA first-year student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was shot in his leg during a celebratory firing incident purportedly on the university campus on Friday night. The incident took place when the victim, Mohammad Rehan, was on his way for dinner at the AMUs North Hall.Rehan, who is being treated at a local hospital, said on Saturday, "Around 8pm, I was going for food when I saw a few students and some outsiders firing indiscriminately in the air, perhaps, celebrating the release of one of them from jail.They also burst fire crackers. As I was trying to avoid the fire crackers, a stray bullet hit my leg. They fled the place after I fell on the ground." Doctors said Rehans condition is still critical, but he is recovering.Assistant proctor of AMU, Syed Ali Nawaz Zaidi, told TOI on Saturday, "One of our students was injured during some kind of celebration event. The AMU administration is probing the entire matter. Police have taken CCTV footage of the incident."SP (city), Mrigank Shekhar Pathak, said, "A case has been registered against 12 named and several unnamed persons under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder), among others, at Civil Lines police station.
