2 ex-students of AMU held by UP ATS over ‘ISIS links’

AGRA: Two former students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) -- Abdullah Arsalan, 25, and Maaz Bin Tariq, 26 -- were arrested by UP Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) over alleged "ISIS links" following raids on their homes in Aligarh city. Both have now been shifted to Lucknow and sent to custody.AMU proctor Mohd Wasim Alitold TOI on Tuesday, "University records suggest one of them completed BTech in petrochemical engineering in 2021 while the other graduated from here via distance learning.Neither the security agencies nor local police have contacted us so far. We heard this news from the media and are ready to cooperate and provide all the necessary details of these students to the security agencies."An AMU official, requesting anonymity, added, "Abdullah Arsalan also passed his high school and intermediate level from an AMU school. He studied here from 2014 to 2021. Maaz Bin Tariq completed high school and intermediate from the AMU school (2016-2018) and BCom through distance learning."A statement by UP ATS said: "Two premises in Aligarh city were raided and two ISIS suspects were picked up. Anti-national propaganda materials related to ISIS and Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent were recovered from their pen drives. They were found to be inspired by ISIS ideology and were taking instructions from handlers."It added: "The arrests were made based on information obtained earlier from the arrest of two other individuals (Shahnawaz and Rizwan) associated with Students of Aligarh Muslim University (a student organisation at AMU)."Arsalan and Tariq were booked under IPC sections 121-A (conspiring to commit certain offenses against state) and 122 (collecting arms, etc., with the intention of waging war against the country), the UP ATS statement added.Earlier, Shahnawaz and Rizwan were arrested and booked under various sections of IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being "deeply inspired by the ISIS ideology and involvement in anti-India activities".
