UP: Three Mumbai cops booked for abetting suicide of Firozabad native

AGRA: A 22-year-old man, who was named as a beneficiary in a cyber fraud case, killed himself in Firozabad following which three Mumbai police personnel were booked for abetment of suicide.According to the Firozabad police, sub-inspector Santosh Marsal and constables Gaikwad and Mhetre (who were only identified by their last names) of the DN Nagar police were charged under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide).The deceased, Suraj Rathod, was identified by the cops posted at the Dadabhai Naoroji Nagar police station in Mumbai as a beneficiary in a cyber fraud case. Rathods father claimed that the three cops visited their home on December 1 and they allegedly thrashed him while taking him to the nearby police station. He further alleged that the Mumbai cops demanded Rs 1.50 lakh to prevent Suraj from going to jail and weaken the case."We somehow managed to arrange Rs 1.30 lakh by the evening and gave all of it to the police sub-inspector. My son was beaten by the accused cops. I kept asking them for a copy of an FIR or any proof that my son was involved in the crime but they didnt listen. The Firozabad police didnt help either," said father of the deceased, Mohar Singh who retired as a postmaster.According to the FIR, Suraj hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his home during the early hours on December 2. He died while under treatment at a hospital in Agra on December 4."My son was traumatized by the beating and the loss of familys reputation. He was a student at a government polytechnic college and had never been to Mumbai. He had no criminal history. The three cops from the Mumbai police are responsible for his death," said Mohar Singh. Superintendent of police Sarvesh Kumar Mishra said, The Mumbai police team had claimed to have details of transactions involving a local in a cybercrime case. According to the law, the team had gone to serve him notice under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.""Based on the complaint received from his father, an FIR has been registered against the three Mumbai police personnel for abetment of suicide. No suicide note was recovered. The postmortem examination of the deceased doesnt mention any external injury. A time-bound impartial probe will be ensured in the matter," he said.
