These smart dustbins offer improved aesthetics allowing their incorporation in the city’s design, constant temperature conditions, slowing bacterial development and controlling the odour, especially in summer time, besides limited maintenance. A smart vehicle comes to the bin site within a stipulated time and carries away waste from the bin to the designated site for disposal. Tribune News ServiceAmritsar, February 10Nearly seven months have passed after the installation of two pairs of the state-of-art dustbins in the city, but no progress has been made on the project. A Chennai-based company specialising in manufacturing of these dustbins was to install 64 large bins at the 32 strategic locations in the city. Amritsar, February 10 Nearly seven months have passed after the installation of two pairs of the state-of-art dustbins in the city, but no progress has been made on the project. A city resident, Samip Singh, said, “It appears that the installation was a poll gimmick just to catch attention of the people. Nobody has bothered to take care after inauguration of the pilot project.” Two pairs of dustbins were installed on the Majitha road and Hakima Gate in middle of the last year under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. A Chennai-based company specialising in manufacturing of these dustbins was to install 64 large bins at the 32 strategic locations in the city. The scheme was to turn the entire garbage lifting and dumping into a mechanical affair. The project is a part of the proposed mechanical sweeping. The 10-foot high dustbins, called smart deep collection bins, are to be managed through GPS/GSM and GPRS wherein the sensor in the bins will inform driver of a truck when these are full. These bins are of two types. The bin with a green lid is for bio-degradable waste. Non-degradable waste goes in the bin with a yellow lid. These bins have a high dumping capacity and have a closely fitted lid with an attached thick and durable bag, which can store a minimum of 1,800 kg garbage. After 80 per cent of bin is filled, it sends a signal through a sensor alerting the truck driver and administrator through the GPRS and SMS alarm system. A smart vehicle comes to the bin site within a stipulated time and carries away waste from the bin to the designated site for disposal. A special crane has been fitted on the truck for lifting the bag from the bin. A sliding door is provided on top of the vehicle to avoid spillage. The bags are made of two-layered durable material in which the waste is kept. These smart dustbins offer improved aesthetics allowing their incorporation in the city’s design, constant temperature conditions, slowing bacterial development and controlling the odour, especially in summer time, besides limited maintenance. When contacted, Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said the project would be finished soon. He said the project got delayed as majority of the MC staff was deployed on the poll duty for the Amritsar (Central) and South Assembly constituencies. He added that the entire project was already sanctioned.
