Protocol breach lands cops, revenue officials in trouble

  • | Monday | 18th September, 2023

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Maharashtra chief secretary Manoj Saunik and additional chief secretary (home) Sujata Saunik pulled up the district administration, revenue divisional commissionerate and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police for failing to maintain the mandatory protocol when the two senior IAS officers visited the city on Saturday to attend the cabinet meeting. On Sunday, as a reaction to this failure in maintaining protocol and the communication gap, the city police issued show-cause notices to the police personnel who were deputed on bandobast duty at the entrance of the Smart City office, where the cabinet meeting was held.Revenue and police authorities said that in violation of the existing protocol, neither a convoy nor a pilot car, not even a gunman, had been provided to these senior IAS officers. The two senior bureaucrats came in different private vehicles, which did not even have the amber lights. As a result, the policemen at the entrance of the venue failed to recognise them, the sources said.By this time, some ministers had started arriving at the venue, and the chief secretary and the additional chief secretarys vehicles were made to wait for several minutes. An additional collector-rank officer, sitting in the front seat of CS Sauniks car, tried to convince the police personnel to let his car through, but in vain. As a result, the chief secretary got out of the car and walked the remaining 200 meters to reach the Smart City building. One of the officers on duty recognised additional chief secretary (home) Sujata Saunik, and immediately let her car through, said an officer who was on duty on Saturday. The city police chief then made a wireless call and pulled up the two assistant commissioner of police-rank officers deputed at the entrance. Later in the evening, in an attempt to apologise to the IAS officers, the officials went to their hotel, but failed to get an appointment.CS Saunik openly expressed his unhappiness with the breach in protocol to revenue divisional commissioner Madhukar Ardad, commissioner of police Manoj Lohiya and district collector Astik Kumar Pandey on Saturday.Senior police officers confirmed the incident and said that the officials of the two departments have been pulled up for the faux pas. The fact is, there was information that MPs Sanjay Raut and Imtiaz Jaleel and some protesters were trying to enter the venue by giving a slip to the security set-up. Not taking any chance, we started screening every vehicle coming to the gate. That is why the senior bureaucrats vehicles were stopped, said a senior police officer. When contacted, CS Saunik said: No comments. There was some confusion that resulted in the situation, but I would not like to comment. Despite repeated attempts, ACS Saunik could not be reached for her comments.
