Bus plunges into gorge in Jalna dist, 25 injured

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Twenty-five people on board a Nagpur-bound private bus were injured, two of them critically, when the vehicle fell into a gorge off a bridge in Jalna district minutes after Monday midnight.The bus had originated from Pune on Monday evening. Police on Tuesday said the accident occurred as the driver lost control over the vehicle at the beginning of the bridge on the Aurangabad-Jalna highway at Matrewadi village in Badnapur tehsil.The police started the rescue operation after getting the alert about the accident around 12.15 am on Tuesday. The two critically injured people, including the driver of the bus, were admitted to a hospital in Jalna.Assistant inspector Sudam Bhagwat of the Badnapur police, who, along with his team, was the first to reach the spot, said, "Prima facie it appears that the driver was speeding and lost control over the bus as it was approaching the bridge." The bus fell several feet into the gorge and turned on its side in the bed of a dry stream under the bridge. Additional police personnel were deployed to clear the traffic snarl caused by the accident. A senior officer said the police would check if the driver was drunk or drowsy. The officer said the drivers recovery was essential for the probe progress. As of now, the police have registered an FIR against the driver for negligent and rash driving and causing hurt by an act endangering life or safety of others.
