Encroachers attack workers of Sambhajinagar civic body

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The anti-encroachment drive by the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation in Mukundwadi took a violent turn on Thursday after some local residents allegedly assaulted civic workers and burnt down the heavy machinery used to demolish illegal structures.The incident occurred when the civic squad removed temporary illegal structures.A few local residents opposed the action stating that they have obtained a stay order from the court against the drive.Things turned ugly after some locals allegedly assaulted civic staffers. When the civic squad tried leaving the place, the locals targeted the heavy machinery used during the drive. They first damaged the glasses of the JCB vehicle and later set it on fire.The civic staffers sought help from fire brigade, but the heavy machinery was damaged considerably by the time the firefighters reached the spot.In a statement, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation said that it has incurred damage to the tune of Rs30 lakh. While no civic staffer has suffered injuries in the violence, the municipal commissioner has called for registration of a police complaint in the matter, a civic official said. The CSMC has been taking all out action against illegal structures in different parts of the city for the past few weeks. Earlier this week, a total of eight illegal shops were demolished in the railway station area. The investigation uncovered a large-scale manufacturing operation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, leading to the seizure of drugs worth Rs 250 crore and the arrest of two individuals. The investigation was carried out in coordination with the directorate of revenue intelligence and involved tracking the supply chains from peddlers to manufacturing units.
