CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Mangesh Sable, the sarpanch of the Gevraipaiga village in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, was detained along with two of his supporters for damaging vehicles belonging to lawyer and Dalit activist Gunratna Sadavarte in Mumbai on Thursday morning.Talking to TOI, Sable acknowledged that he had targeted Sadavarte vehicles as the lawyer had frequently opposed reservation for the Maratha community and issued statements against Maratha quota activistManoj Jarange.Jarange, however, has distanced himself from Sables actions.Though Sable and his aides were detained and taken to the Bhoiwada police station, they were later released.Earlier in the day, Sable and his aides, Vasant Pathrikar and Raju Sathe, reached Mumbai and broke the windowpanes of two vehicles belonging to Sadavarte. A video of their attack was taken by some youths accompanying Sable and uploaded on social media platforms. In the 56-second video, three men can be seen breaking the glass panes of two vehicles while shouting Ek Maratha Lakh Maratha slogans. The video also shows the police personnel on duty stunned by the sudden attack. The cops soon overpowered the trio and took them into custody.About a month ago, in protest against the police lathicharge on Maratha protesters in Jalnas Antarwali Sarati village, Sable had blocked the state highway and had torched his car in the middle of the road. Sables latest act has sparked a volley of allegations and counter-allegations between political parties in the state.Meanwhile, Sadavarte blamed Jarange for the attack on his vehicles. Sadavarte, who is from Nanded district in Marathwada, now lives in Mumbai and often boasts of his proximity to BJP. Sadavarte warned that if the state government failed to curb such incidents, he would reach out to all the education institutions and unify the open category students against Jarange and his Maratha reservation demand.Jarange denied having any links with people who targeted Sadavartes vehicles in Mumbai."Some people are constantly provoking the Maratha community in an attempt to derail the Maratha reservation movement. However, neither I nor any Maratha community member supports such acts of violence," Jarange said. He also said he does not even know him (Sadavarte) and would not like to comment further on the matter.
