Nanded ACB nabs PWD staffers on charge of accepting bribe

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The superintending engineer of the public work department (PWD) of Nanded division, along with a senior clerk, was arrested on Wednesday for accepting a bribe of Rs 6.40 lakh from a contractor as a commission for work worth over Rs 14 crore. The arrested were identified as superintending engineer Gajendra Rajput (54) and senior clerk Vinod Kandhare. The two were remanded to five-day custody after being produced before the court on Thursday.Teams of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB), after nabbing the two staffers, carried out searches at the homes of the accused. They found cash worth Rs 73 lakh from Rajputs home and seized the same. The contractor, the complainant in the case, had bagged road construction tenders worth Rs 14.10 crore. Rajput allegedly demanded Rs 7 lakh as his cut for forwarding the proposal to the chief engineer for the final sanctioning of the work. When the contractor reached out to Kandhare to move the tender file forward, he demanded Rs 50,000, an officer said. According to the complaint, the accused clerk sought the bribe amount for himself as well as a fellow clerk. The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe amount, reached out to ACB Nanded and lodged a complaint. During the verification of demand carried out by the ACB team, the accused negotiated the bribe amount, he said.Nanded anti-corruption bureau deputy superintendent Anil Katke maintained that Kandhare accepted the bribe amount of Rs 6.40 lakh, following which the two were arrested late on Wednesday. The Anti-Corruption Bureau gathered evidence that Ahire was seeking the bribe on behalf of his senior officials and has filed a First Information Report against him. Ahire has not been apprehended yet.
