Internet suspension impacts e-services in Marathwada

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar/Nashik/Kolhapur: The functioning of a section of banks from rural areas and government offices, among other establishments from Jalna and Beed districts along with rural areas of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, was partially affected due to the snapping of internet services.A 48-hour suspension of all internet services was brought into effect from Wednesday morning in nine tehsils in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, due to the law and order situation in the region over Maratha reservation stir.Similarly, internet service suspension was in force in Beed and Jalna districts since Tuesday.The orders for suspension of internet services were introduced owing to the violence and protests in different parts of the state due to the agitation for reservation for the Maratha community. Employees of delivery apps claimed loss of daily earnings due to the suspension of internet services. Several banks situated in the urban areas of Marathwada witnessed smooth working due to the availability of leased lines, those based in rural areas were affected due to suspension of the internet services. The cash transactions and other daily work came to a halt in rural areas of Beed district. Some of the workload was shifted to bank branches in urban areas where leased lines were available, Mukund Joshi, a banker from Shirur-Kasar, said. Authorities at the Beed district collectorate said many routine activities and official processes that are internet-dependant could not be accessed due to snapping of internet services. The administrative processes that are not dependent on the internet were on at the government offices. The loss of work will be compensated once the internet services resume, said a tehsildar-level officer from Beed district.The RTO authorities from Jalna said issuing of challan about the fitness test of vehicles, along with some other routine work, was hampered due to the unavailability of the internet. Yashodeep Dhande, a hotelier from Beed, said online food delivery was not possible for hotels and eateries for the last two days. I get a minimum of a dozen online food delivery orders on a daily basis. Several families avoid visiting hotels fearing violence, he said. Road blockages, bandhs were reported from different parts of the state on Thursday as well. In Nashik district, all shops and business establishments at Pimpalgaon Baswant town in Niphad taluka of Nashik district remained closed in response to a bandh call by the local unit of Sakal Maratha Morcha, an outfit fighting for various demands of the community. The two agriculture produce market committees at Pimpalgaon Baswant and Yeola also remained shut. Pimpalgaon Baswant and Yeola, two major onion markets in the state, did not witness any auction on Thursday. The two APMCs usually report onion auction of over 15,000 quintals a day, said APMC officials. There are over 6,000 shops and commercial establishments at Pimpalgaon Baswant that has a population of over one lakh. The bandh at Pimpalgaon Baswant town passed off peacefully, said inspector Ashok Pawar of the local police station.Pravin Ghumare, a senior member of the Pimpalgaon Baswant unit of Sakal Maratha Morcha, said the response towards the bandh from the shop owners was spontaneous. We had appealed to the people to observe the bandh to express solidarity with Manoj Jarange, who is spearheading the Maratha quota stir, said Ghumare. Roadblocks disrupt traffic in KolhapurAt Bambawade village in Shahuwadi tehsil of Kolhapur district, agitators staged a sit-in protest on Kolhapur-Ratnagiri road for three hours and ended the protest only after the tehsildar met them. The traffic movement towards Ratnagiri was affected for hours. Marathas from several villages gathered at Balinga village and sat on Kolhapur-Gaganbawda road for nearly half an hour on Thursday morning and obstructed traffic moving towards and from Konkan.Sakal Maratha Samaj activists from Peth Vadgaon town of Kolhapur district marched with poster stating that the local MP Dhairyashil Mane is missing.Agitators at Sangli burnt a copy of the resolution passed by all party leaders at Mumbai on Wednesday.
