27 child marriages thwarted in 7 months in Sambhajinagar

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) prevented 27 child marriages between April and October this year.This involved eight crackdowns each in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Paithan talukas, followed by five actions in Gangapur taluka and one action each in Vaijapur, Kannad, Phulambri and Sillod talukas, among other areas.Vikas Meena, CEO of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Zilla Parishad, during a review meeting held recently, demanded that vigil be stepped up to prevent child marriages.The DCPU has been told to work in coordination with different government departments. Child marriages have to be ended with joint efforts and mass awareness, he said. The CEO said child marriage causes serious health risk to girls as well as their children.Schools and local self-governing bodies have to play a crucial role in spreading public awareness about the ill effects of child marriages. Measures such as counselling of parents, street plays and screening of documentaries can prove effective in spreading mass awareness, he said. The Zilla Parishad administration has stressed on implementation of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme of the government for empowerment of girls. Education is a tool that enables girls to become part of the mainstream society. It enlightens them about their rights and means to fight for them, the Zilla Parishad (ZP) authorities said.
