Latur hawkers given 15 days to remove nails pierced into trees

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Latur Municipal Corporation (LMC) has given 15 days to roadside shops, hawkers and commercial establishments, among others, to remove nails pierced into trees.The civic body has announced a drive against tree-nailing and people failing to remove nails will face action, the municipal administration said in a public announcement.Earlier, the Vasundhara Foundation, an advocacy group, approached the Latur Municipal Corporation seeking an official intervention to put a check on the rampant tree-nailing in different parts of the city.Trees are found to be nailed at many places for hanging items meant for sale, erecting display boards and name boards, among other purposes. In some places, trees are nailed to support power cables used for illumination. Public at large has been requested to remove such nails on their own or face action, said LMC officials.According to the Vasundhara Foundation, nailing weakens the trunk of a tree and has a gradual adverse impact on the growth and life of the tree. Young as well as old trees suffer damage due to the insertion of nails.Citing official data, the NGO Green Latur Vruksha Team said the National Air Quality Index of the city falls in the moderate level category.The concerted efforts taken by nature lovers over the years have gradually improved the tree cover in Latur. The trees were chosen based on factors such as age, health, and location. Compensatory trees are planted in a 1:12 ratio for any casualties. The survival rate of the transplanted trees is currently between 50% and 80%. A total of 2,910 trees were removed for the project, and 46,200 saplings have been planted as compensation. The success rate of the transplanted trees is considered good if at least 50% survive.
