Dhangars throw stones on dist collector’s office in Jalna

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The protest march called by the members of the Dhangar community in Jalna on Tuesday took a violent turn after district collector Shrikrishna Panchal refused to meet them to accept a memorandum of their demands.The Dhangarsare demanding that the community should be included in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. According to police, the protesters resorted to pelting stones at the district collectors office following which vehicles parked on the premises were damaged.Some glass window panes were also damaged due to the stone pelting.After being informed about the incident, a unit of riot control police teams — kept on stand-by at the neighbouring superintendent of polices office — rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Some members of the Dhangar community delivered speeches about the alleged discrimination being faced by them due to governments failure in including them in the ST category. This was followed by protesters demanding to meet Panchal. Beed additional superintendent of police Sachin Pandkar, who is currently holding charge of Jalna district, said the situation is under control and an FIR is being registered against those who have violated the law. This move is an attempt to address the demands of the Dhangar community, who are currently classified as Nomadic Tribes and receive a 3.5% quota, but are seeking ST status and a 7% quota. The committee has been given three months to submit its report.Damage control following Saturday night party at Kartapur CorridorThe head granthi of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Giani Gobind Singh, released a video to defend the Project Management Unit (PMU) after criticism of a party at Kartarpur Corridor. In the video, he stated that there was no violation of Sikh code of conduct during the "official dinner" hosted by the PMU. A group of Indian politicians, including the Punjab Legislative Assembly speaker, also supported Gobind Singh, stating that the dinner took place two kilometers away from the gurdwara and should not be connected to it.
