Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The water resources department (WRD) has increased the flow of water being released for the Jayakwadi dam from upstream areas. The Nilwande dam recorded a discharge of around 10,000 cusec on Sunday evening.Among other key dams in the upstream areas, the Darna was releasing water at 7,070 cusec, while Mula, Bham and Kadwa were releasing at 4,000, 150 and 3,248 cusec, respectively. In charge of the Jayakwadi major irrigation project, Vijay Kakde said the water level of Nathsagar, the Jayakwadi dams reservoir, was expected to show gradual rise over a period of the next few days.We expect the live storage in the dam to go past 45% after receiving water from the upstream areas. The storage level may vary keeping the transition loss in mind, he said. While the Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) has ordered a release of 8.6 TMC towards the Jayakwadi dam, a transition loss in the range of 20% to 40% is expected.Water rights activists have sought power cuts in villages situated on river banks to curb illegal lifting of water. While unauthorized water pumps continue to remain a menace, these pumps must remain off at least during the release of water for Jayakwadi. It is a standard practice to switch off the power supply during the process of releasing water and must be followed in letter and spirit, water rights activist Abhijeet Dhanorkar said.Meanwhile, the GMIDC officials said no decision has yet been taken on the release of water from the Jayakwadi dam to Majalgaon dam from Beed district. Majalgaon major irrigation project caters to the water needs of Beed district and was holding a worrisome less than 6% live storage.
