Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Rescue experts and conservationists have sought a crackdown on the sale of glue traps in the city. The experts said these traps — meant to catch mice and rats — are actually killing snakes and birds. The Animal Welfare Board of India had called for a ban on the sale of glue traps in 2001, and later made a fresh appeal in 2020.On November 17, the department of animal husbandry of the state government requested the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to comply with the ban.On November 23, the FDA asked its competent authorities in the drugs section to conduct a crackdown on the sale of glue traps and submit an action-taken report. However, rescue experts believe the FDA needs to take stricter action as cases of snakes or birds getting trapped in the glue traps continue.People usually throw glue traps, with mice trapped in them, out in the open. Birds and snakes prey on mice. So, when they try to approach a trapped mouse or rat, they too get trapped and die a painful death, said rescue expert Manoj Gaikwad. He added that the sticky chemical substance on the glue pads damages the bird feathers and causes immense pain to snakes when they are removed from the traps. When contacted, FDA commissioner Abhimanyu Kale said, The sale of these traps largely takes place through chemists and other shops. The FDA inspectors across different divisions will be asked to raid the establishments where such sales are taking place.Conservationists have appealed to the public to not use glue traps. There are other effective alternatives to get rid of mice. Snakes are a crucial part of the food chain. These glue pads are killing them, said Kishor Pathak, the honorary wildlife warden for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. We also published the following articles recentlyMay take 2 to 15 days to rescue trapped men: CentreThe rescue exercise could take anywhere between two and 15 days.
