Crops across 46,000ha damaged in Sambhajinagar

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The recent unseasonal rain damaged crops and orchards on at least 46,202 hectares in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. According to the preliminary assessment, Parbhani (692 hectares) and Beed (215 hectares) districts have also reported agricultural losses. Deputy divisional commissioner Anant Gavhane said the crop damagefigures may increase as the process of official assessment is still in progress.Help will be offered to the affected farmers as per norms once the panchanamas are done in all rain-hit areas, he said.As per the official report, crop damage on over 22,000 hectares of rain-fed land and on more than 22,000 hectares of irrigated land has been reported in three districts of Marathwada. Unharvested kharif crops, such as cotton and pigeon pea, and rabi crops, including wheat and sorghum, have been damaged. Grape, papaya and pomegranate orchards have also taken a hit on 93 acres in the Parbhani and 64 acres in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.Moreover, 180 head of cattle have died in lightning strikes and 38 kutcha houses and have been damaged.Kisan Sabha leader Rajan Kshirsgar said more crop damage has taken place in Marathwada. The state government must not leave the farmers at the mercy of crop insurance firms.
