Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Marathwada region, which witnessed yet another spell of unseasonal rainfall, still awaits the installation of a Doppler radar for more accurate weather forecasts.While the region is already allegedly getting a raw deal as it has been offered with a C-band radar against demand for X-band radar, the alleged inordinate delay in putting place in the proposed facility has evoked criticism from experts. The Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Centre earlier in April had told the Lok Sabha that the site selection is in process for the installation of the key facility for Marathwada.Pressing for the X-band radar for Marathwada, independent meteorologist, Kirankumar Johare said the demand for Doppler radar for Marathwada has been pending for almost a decade now. The X-band radar will help authorities sense comprehensive information, enabling accurate predictions of rainfall amounts, timing, and geographical locations, which further help in anticipating events like cloudbursts or dry spells, he said.Karad, in April last year, had announced the installation of C-band radar at Mhaismal in Khuldabad taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, which is located around 40 km from here. He said the facility would come up at the cost of Rs 100 crore and would benefit over 70 lakh farmers from Marathwada and nearby areas. A section of the meteorologist community has demanded raising the Doppler radar on a mountain range near Ajanta Caves in Sillod taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, terming it as a place located at a higher sea level than Mhaismal.
