Veteran Himroo artist passes away at 82 in Sambhajinagar

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Renowned Himroo craftsman Ahmed Saeed Qureshi passed away due to old age here on Monday night. He was 82 years old.Qureshi was the fourth-generation member of his family to run a manufacturing unit producing Himroo fabric in the Nawabpura area of the city. The fabric is made by blending cotton and silk.The veteran artisan received multiple awards for his untiring efforts in keeping the craft alive. Historian Dulari Qureshi, a distant relative of Ahmed, said he overcame many odds in his life to not only keep the Himroo craft alive, but also to restore its old glory. He devoted his life to Himroo craft. His unwavering commitment is a great contribution to the local heritage and culture, she said.Imran Qureshi, son of the late artist, said the artwork of his father had a demand from abroad. We used to online orders from European countries, USA and Canada among other parts of the world. He ensured our young generation carry forward the mantle, he said.Ahmed is survived by a wife, two sons, a daughter and grandchildren.
