‘Blanket’ reservation for all Marathas impossible: Mahajan

  • | Wednesday | 6th December, 2023

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: State rural development minister Girish Mahajan, who was part of the state government delegation that negotiated with quota activist Manoj Jarange and got more time for the implementation of Maratha reservation, said it is impossible to grant blanket reservation to the entire community. Refusing to comment directly on meeting the mutually agreed-upon deadline of December 24 to grant reservation, Mahajan had said: We intend to give a legally foolproof reservation. We would not simply give the Maratha a piece of paper, like the Congress government did under the Gadhe committee, which the courts then scrapped. We need to get an order from the Supreme Court giving reservation to the Marathas, and we are prepared for that.Mahajan added: CM and both the deputy CMs are personally paying attention to Jaranges demands. I feel, we had made it clear earlier that his demand of blanket reservation for the Marathas was not feasible. On four occasions that I met him (as a part of the delegation), I told him that it would be impossible to give reservation to the entire community. Reservation would be given based on the Kunbi certificates dug out from the records. Under what law could we be giving reservation to the entire Maratha community?Everyone close to Jarange — including all the intellectuals, professors, principals, vice-chancellors, subject experts, Justice Shinde and Justice Gaikwad — after working on this issue has come to the conclusion that it is not possible to give blanket reservation. It is only through the petition currently pending before the Supreme Court, that we could find a way. We intend to give complete and lasting reservation to the Maratha community. This is what the CM has said repeatedly, Mahajan said.
