Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: MP Imtiaz Jaleel has questioned the Union government as to why none of the 1,182 universities, including the 56 run by the Centre, from India did not feature on the list of the worlds best 200 universities. The MP from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar said this while speaking on the Central University (Amendment) Bill, 2023, introduced in Parliament on Thursday. The amendment bill aimed at establishing a university specifically and especially for the tribal population and providing avenues of higher education and research facilities for students from thetribal communities. The only university from India to find a place in the worlds best universities list is ranked somewhere around 320. Are we stressing more on quantity and compromising on quality? he asked during the session. It is a welcome move to start new universities, including the ones for tribal communities. However, it is high time that the quality of education and the condition of universities was improved instead of merely focussing on increasing the number of universities, Jaleel said.If the Centre had so much affection for the tribal communities, why was President Draupadi Murmu, who is from a tribal community, not invited for the inauguration of the new Parliament building, he said. Citing the data provided by Union minister of state for education Subhash Sarkar in April this year, Jaleel said 19, 000 students belonging to the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and OBC categories had to opt out of premier educational institutions such as IITs, IIMs and central universities. Of these students, 2,622 were from the ST category.
