The suspect pumped four bullets in her body. According to Gurmeet Singh, son-in-law of deceased Manjit Kaur Rani (66), the suspect was in an inebriated condition and stayed at the crime scene after the incident without showing any signs of remorse. Thereafter, the police reached the spot and arrested him. The suspect has been identified as Gurtej Singh (33), who owns a small salon in the village and stays separately from his mother. The incident took place in full public view in the street when the victim was on her way home after buying vegetables from a vendor. Talking to Bathinda Tribune, Gurmeet said, “Gurtej was drunk when he killed his mother. He came with his licenced revolver and started abusing his mother in the middle of the street adjacent to her house. When she just turned and started heading towards her house, he fired a bullet from the rear. Thereafter, the victim fell down. Then he came close and fired two more bullets in her chest and another bullet near face, leaving her in a pool of blood. She died on the spot and he did not try to run from the spot before the police came and arrested him. He had got a licenced revolver after selling a portion of his land.” Bhinder Kaur, daughter of the deceased, said, “My brother is an alcoholic and always used to demand money from mother. He had also sold a portion of land for money. Initially, my mother used to give him money, but later when she denied, he used to come to her house and fight with her. On a number of occasions, he even abused his mother. When my husband and I visited my mother’s house, he used to object to it. My brother even threatened us with dire consequences.” Later, police personnel reached the crime scene. After recording statements of relatives and residents of the village on Wednesday evening, the police got post-mortem done at the Civil Hospital on Thursday afternoon. The suspect has two daughters and a son. Rakesh Kumar, Station House Officer, Nehianawala police station, said, “On a complaint of Gurmeet Singh, we have registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code against the suspect. We are further investigating the matter.”
