BHOPAL: It was more of relief, over joy for Bhopal and Indore – as two Madhya Pradesh cities retained their position as the top two cleanest cities for the second consecutive year. MP state assembly elections are to be held later this year.The result of Swach Survekshan 2018 , a sanitation and hygiene survey of 4,041 cities was announced on Wednesday. Last year, 434 cities surveyed in the union government organised survey.A tweet -- ‘Congratulations #Indore & #Bhopal for a repeat performance at #1&2’ - by union minister of state (independent charge) ministry of housing and urban affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, set off celebrations at the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters.“We are proud for the achievement. Sustaining the top rank for Indore and Bhopal was a challenge and we overcame,” said MP department of urban administration and housing (UAHD) principal secretary, Vivek Agarwal.Barely three months after 22 of MP cities were in top 100 of Swachh Survekshan of 2017, nearly all municipal corporations endorsed a campaign ‘to make their city number 1’. The jingles played non-stop on municipal corporation vehicles. Emerging among the cleanest cities in the country, BMC commissioner Priyanka Das said, “Swachh Survekshan in 2018 was more competitive than last year. Incremental improvements in collection and disposal of waste were needed.” We focussed on evaluation criteria of the survey and improved upon those parameters, she added.
