Bhopal: Cop dragged 700m in hit-&-run, hips torn off

Bhopal: In a gruesome hit-and-run, a man trying to dodge a police checkpoint rammed a police officer, and dragged him at high speed for over 700metres in the heart of Bhopal late Saturday night despite knowing that the cop was stuck to the bonnet.The officer, ASI Amritlal Bhilala, 52, is in a critical condition and doctors are trying to save his life. A large part of the lower half of his body literally got chopped off in the harrowing drag. It left a grisly blood trail for 700m on the road.ASI Bhilala was manning a check point, along with six other cops, in front of Best Price showroom on 80 Feet Road on Saturday night. They saw a car coming at high speed from Nishatpura and Bhilala stepped forward to flag it down.But instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and smashed into the officer. The impact was so severe that the officer got stuck in the bonnet. As the others watched in horror, the driver kept accelerating, dragging Bhilala along the road as the lower half of his body was trapped between the car and asphalt Bhilala was thrown free only when the driver hit a speed breaker near Karond Mandi at high speed. His teammates called an ambulance and took him to Narmada Hospital. Police tried to chase the car also but lost track of it.The officer has sustained grievous injuries - his hips are completely severed. There was an urgent need for blood transfusion, which has since been done. Doctors are going to perform a surgery. He is a resident of Dewas district and his family also lives there."
