Inter-state gang of sandalwood smugglers busted in Ashoknagar

Bhopal: An inter-state gang of sandalwood smugglers was busted in Ashoknagar with the police recovering 21 logs of Malyagiri sandalwood from a SUV driven by a man wearing UP police uniform. Those arrested include Deepak Chouhan, Vijay Rajput and Bane Singh Rajput, all gang members and Akhilesh Joshi, a sandal wood trader from Kanpur. Two of the gang members also belong to Bharatpur in Rajasthan.The cost of the sandalwood recovered from the SUV has been estimated to be around Rs 8 lakh, police said. The driver told police that the wood was cut from different colonies of Ashoknagar, police said. More than two quintals of freshly cut sandalwood was loaded in the SUV.

Malyagiri variety of sandal is one of the costliest species and its trees are found in Ashoknagar and Rewa.The investigating officer Ramveer Singh said that different parts of the Malyagiri sandalwood are sold from Rs 8000 a kg to Rs 3000 a kg . Besides, its oil costs Rs 1.1 lakh per kg, he added.When the vehicle was stopped on Sunday by the police in Shadora tehsil of Ashoknagar, the driver tried to run away but was caught. More than two quintals of freshly cut sandalwood was loaded in the SUV. The driver told police that the wood was cut from different colonies of Ashoknagar, police said. Besides, cutting equipment, a country-made pistol and live cartridges were also recovered from the vehicle.The gang comprised three members of banjara community and one trader from Kanpur, Ramveer Singh said. Those arrested include Deepak Chouhan, Vijay Rajput and Bane Singh Rajput, all gang members and Akhilesh Joshi, a sandal wood trader from Kanpur. Two of the gang members also belong to Bharatpur in Rajasthan.The cost of the sandalwood recovered from the SUV has been estimated to be around Rs 8 lakh, police said. The driver wearing the UP police uniform also carried an identity card with a seal from the superintendent of police of Fatehpur, police said.“This seems to be an inter-state gang and the gang members have admitted that they had stolen sandalwood from different locations of Ashoknagar in the past as well”, Sunil Kumar Jain, superintendent of police, told media. All have been remanded to police custody and are being interrogated, the SP added.
