UJJAIN: A mysterious blast in a toy car, left by someone in a motor repair workshop, severely injured a 14-year-old boy in Ujjain’s Barnagar on Wednesday, triggering panic in the town. A bomb disposal team and the anti-terrorism squad is on the spot. The victim has told police that he looked inside a bag that was abandoned in the garage and found what looked like a toy car. He decided to put batteries in it. The moment he attached the last battery, the ‘car’ exploded. He was injured in the hands and legs, and two fingers of his right hand are shattered.“As of now, we are not sure of the nature of the explosion. Experts are trying to ascertain the material,” said Barnagar subdivisional police officer Sher Singh Bhuria. The blast took place around 11am, but police received information several hours later, triggering a scramble for the site of the explosion. An ATS team investigated the scene as bomb experts went through what was left of the ‘toy’.The car workshop is in Morwal Colony. The owner has told police that he was out when someone came in a car and placed a bag containing the toy car and some popcorn. His son found the bag and told him about it. “I told him that someone was sure to come around for it and went about my work,” he told police.Curiosity got the better of the boy and he looked inside the bag on Wednesday. He was excited to find a car in its packaging. Some screws were loose, so he tightened them, he told police from his hospital bed.“The toy car had points for three batteries. Two were in place. The boy took a battery from the wall clock and put it in the empty socket. As soon as he placed the car on the ground, it exploded,” the SDOP said. Neighbours took the injured teen to hospital where he was immediately wheeled into surgery. He is now out of danger, say police. “We believe that the third battery completed the electrical circuit to trigger the blast. We’ll have to see what material was used,” said an officer.Investigators are scanning CCTV footage of the locality and nearby roads and speaking with residents to identify the man who left the bag in the workshop.
