BHOPAL: Congress’ biggest loss seems to be Vindhya region comprising of 30 seats across the districts of Rewa, Satna, Sindhi, Singrauli, Anuppur and Umaria. In 2013, this was the region from where Congress garnered 12 seats -- the highest the party got from any region. In 2018 with anti-incumbency against ruling BJP, party was expecting between 20 to 24 seats after upper-caste discontent with the Centre over SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Rewa, Satna, Sidhi have more than a dozen seats with large number of Brahmin voters. It was thought that Brahmins would shift allegiance from BJP to Congress. However, that calculation seems to have failed as all eight seats in Rewa have gone to BJP and Congress lost its vital Gurh constituency held by senior leader Sundarlal Tiwari.Out of seven seats in Satna, BJP seems to have either won of leading in five. Leader of Opposition and four times MLA Ajay Singh is trailing by more than 6,400 votes against BJP’s Saradendu Tiwari. Congress managed to retain Chitrakoot and gained Satna assembly seat but deputy Speaker Rajendra Singh lost Amarpatan.Another prominent Congress face Yadvendra Singh is trailing in Nagod against BJP’s former minister Nagendra Singh Nagod. When Congress seems to have gained in all other regions including Malwa-Nimar, Mahakaushal, Madhya Bharat and Chambal. Even as counting of votes continues till this story was filed, Congress will either remain static or not gain much in Vindhya.
