Congress defends MISA and DIR pension scrutiny

State party vice-president Vijesh Lunawat said, “The Congress govt will have to withdraw this decision, like they made a U-turn on Vande Mataram issue. “Our findings are that many people drawing this pension were probably seven or eight years old when MISA was enforced and could not have been detained. Soon after coming to power on December 29, the Congress government circulated an order from GAD, instructing district administrations to suspend disbursement of MISA pension until a thorough scrutiny was completed.The circular says that there was “overspending” of MISA fund than what was allocated in the budget. This is not pension but an honorarium paid to those veterans who fought to save the democracy. Chouhan and Union minister Thavar Chand Gehlot are among MISA detainees.

BHOPAL: The state Congress on Wednesday defended the Kamal Nath government’s decision to ‘suspend, verify and start a new process’ of giving honorary pension to MISA and DIR (Defence of India Rules) detainees.Initial scrutiny has exposed several irregularities, the ruling party said.An order was passed by the General Administration Department (GAD) on Tuesday and sent to divisional commissioners and district collectors to physically verify the identity and existence of all MISA and DIR pensioners in MP.“MISA pension was distributed by the BJP government to its own party members and RSS workers like sweets,” said Shobha Oza, chairperson of the state Congress media committee, on Wednesday morning. “Our findings are that many people drawing this pension were probably seven or eight years old when MISA was enforced and could not have been detained. The Congress government has no intention of stopping the scheme, but only wants to scrutinise and ensure that those getting benefits are genuine MISA detainees,” she explained.Beneficiaries were given a pension of Rs 25,000 per month under ‘Loktantra Senani Samman Nidhi’ scheme, launched by the former Shivraj Singh Chouhan BJP government in 2008. Soon after coming to power on December 29, the Congress government circulated an order from GAD, instructing district administrations to suspend disbursement of MISA pension until a thorough scrutiny was completed.The circular says that there was “overspending” of MISA fund than what was allocated in the budget. Chouhan and Union minister Thavar Chand Gehlot are among MISA detainees. Chouhan was just 17 years old when he was imprisoned under MISA.GAD’s order Tuesday says revenue inspectors will carry out physical verification of beneficiaries.BJP is seeing red.
