SAPAKS flag-bearer to contest against PM

Bhopal: Hiralal Trivedi — patron of the upper caste pressure group SAPAKS — will contest Lok Sabha polls against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi.Trivedi, a former bureaucrat, told this to TOI on Wednesday, and added that he will contest the Bhopal seat as well. They gheraoed top leaders from both BJP and Congress, holding them equally responsible for the ordinance.This time, SAPAKS will contest 15 Lok Sabha seats in MP, and contest in 45 unreserved Parliamentary seats in nine states in tie-ups with regional outfits. If it manages to corner a section of upper caste votes, it could hurt BJP and Congress alike.Upper caste anger was a key factor in the 2018 assembly polls in MP, with SAPAKS launching a fierce campaign against both parties. SAPAKS contested the election on a campaign they called ‘Hum Hain Mai Ke Lal’ — a counter to former Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s assurance to SCs/STs that ‘koi mai ka lal arakshan khatam nahin kar sakta hai’. “Earlier, my plan was to fight from Mandsaur, but after I learnt that former CM Digvijaya Singh may be asked to contest from Bhopal, I decided to switch,” he said.SAPAKS — for Samanya Picchdaa Evam Alpsankhyak Samaj — shot to limelight in the run-up to the 2018 assembly election by organizing protests against the ordinance to overturn Supreme Court’s easing of arrest laws under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
