Mungawali, Chitrakoot bypoll may be with Gujarat polls

It is possible that these two seats could go for by-poll even before Gujarat assembly elections? The state EC officials say they have no authority to make a make a presumption. Law says that elections are to be held within six months of a vacancy. "Bypolls will be held for both the seats.Dates will be decided and announced by the Election Commission of India," a senior EC official said. Though state office of EC refrained from making any speculation on by-poll dates, the political party offices are expecting it to be with the Gujarat assembly elections.Gujarat is due for assembly polls by end December and political party offices in Madhya Pradesh believe that bypolls of Chitrakoot and Mungawali would be held around that time.However, Chitrakoot would then have exceeded its six months tenure without representation in the assembly.

BHOPAL: With the demise of former minister and MLA from Mungawali Mahendra Singh Kalukhera on Monday, two assembly seats have fallen vacant in Madhya Pradesh In the last week of May, another Congress MLA Prem Singh from Chitrakoot assembly seat died after prolonged illness.The Congress and BJP were preparing for one by-election in Chitrakoot when the death of Kalukhera two days ago, came as a shocker for the entire political fraternity.Next assembly election is due in the state in November 2018. Law says that elections are to be held within six months of a vacancy. Election Commission also, normally does not go for a by-poll if less than one year of tenure is left for the sitting government.But here, Chitrakoot is vacant without a legislator since May 29 and the next assembly elections are 14 months away.A senior official of the state Election Commission said that bypolls will be held in both the assembly seats.
