Day after killing Punjab cop, gangster killed in encounter

Gangster Sukhwinder Singh Rana, alias Rana Mansoorpuria, met his end in a fierce encounter with the police on Monday, a day after he fatally shot a young Punjab Police constable Amritpal Singh during a raid in Hoshiarpur district. The dramatic events unfolded as law enforcement agencies intensified their efforts to apprehend Rana, who had been on the run since the fatal incident.   Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surinder Lamba said that the police had been actively pursuing Rana, and upon locating him, a confrontation ensued. Rana opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate. During the exchange of gunfire, Rana sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead upon examination.   The police were searching for him (Sukhwinder Rana). When the police traced him, he opened fire on the police and was injured in the retaliatory firing. Later when he was examined, he was found dead, said SSP Lamba.   Ranas demise marks the culmination of a manhunt launched after he perpetrated the heinous act of gunning down the Constable Amritpal Singh during a raid in Mukerian village on Sunday when the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team was raiding his house in Punjabs Hoshiarpur district. Following the incident, Rana evaded capture, prompting an intensive search operation by law enforcement agencies.   The encounter with Rana took place in a secluded area near Hoshiarpur, where police personnel had surrounded him. As the situation escalated, Rana attempted to flee but was ultimately cornered by the police. The encounter resulted in Ranas demise, bringing an end to the intense manhunt.   Meanwhile, the funeral rites of Constable Amritpal Singh were solemnly performed on Monday in his ancestral village of Jandor. A large number of people gathered to pay their respects to the fallen officer. Additionally, the family of Amritpal Singh will receive financial assistance of Rs two crore.   KU announces Rajib Goyal Prizes for young scientists Chandigarh: Kurukshetra Universitys Goyal Award Committee on Monday announced the Rajib Goyal Prize. Committee chairman Prof Som Nath Sachdeva said that KU honours the best scientists of the country every year, recognizing their significant contributions in the field of science and technology. Prof Sachdeva said that each Rajib Goyal Prize consists of a medal, citation, and a cash prize of Rs one lakh. The university announced the names of four distinguished senior scientists selected for the Goyal Awards last week. Four scientists, all below the age of 45, have been selected, including Dr Saptarshi Basu, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bengaluru, (Applied Sciences); Dr Sebastian C Peter, JNCASR, Bengaluru, (Chemical Sciences); Dr Bushra Ateeq, Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, IIT Kanpur (Life Sciences); and Dr Sanjeev Kumar Aggarwal, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, (Physical Sciences).   PM Modi lauds performance of Punjabs 15-year-old badminton player Hoshiarpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended 15-year-old badminton player Tanvi Sharma, who hails from Punjab, for her stellar performances at the national and international levels throughout the Badminton Championships of 2023. Sharma has captured the attention of the nation by clinching a gold medal at the Senior Asian Championship held in Malaysia. Modi, in a letter to the badminton player on behalf of the entire nation, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the young athlete, recognizing her outstanding achievement on the international stage.   Former IAS officers son commits suicide Shimla: Son of a retired IAS officer Amitabh Awasthi, 26-year-old Mudit Awasthi, was fond deceased in his room in Brockhurst, Chhota Shimla. Authorities suspect suicide by hanging. The Chhota Shimla police swiftly responded to the distressing news, initiating an investigation upon securing the scene and the body.
