FARIDABAD: Faridabad police have started indexing all the auto rickshaws plying within the city by issuing a serial number. Auto unions have been asked to submit details of each auto rickshaw, owner, driver and their phone number in the photo. Serial number, issued by police, for auto, each auto will have to fix it front and back side.Traffic police are preparing an index of all auto rickshaws with their details. So, as and when required they can get all the details about the auto, its driver and owner with the serial number of the auto."The move is aimed at prevention and detection of crime," said DCP (traffic) Amit Yashwardhan, adding that in case there is any incident involving any auto, the victim will just have to share the serial number of the auto. With the serial number police will track the auto its owner and driver instantly.DCP said all drivers need to have police verification. The auto owners will have to inform police if the driver of the auto is changed. "Absence of serial number stickers, which will be issued by police, will lead to challan," said DCP.DCP said they had a meeting with all the auto unions and they have been directed to submit the details in 10-day and stickers with serial numbers will be issued at earliest. At present police do not have exact data about the number of auto operators in the city and who are owners and drivers. As per RTO over 40,000 auto are registered in Gurgaon. "It is not clear how many of them are still operational. With the indexing we will know the exact number of auto operational in the city," said DCP.According to the police the move will be helpful in the prevention of women crime. "As an when any women board an auto she just needs to click picture of serial number and share with her family or known one for any emergency," said DCP, adding that indexing will also deter auto rickshaw drivers from indulging in any antisocial and criminal activities as they will be fear to be caught. At present it has become very difficult to track an auto and its driver in case of a criminal investigation. The auto driver also takes advantage of this anonymity. Once they know that their picture, mobile number and personal details are with police it will act as deterrence.
