NEW DELHI: Light tremors were felt in parts of Delhi and NCR as a minor earthquake of 3.1 intensity on the Richter scale jolted the region at around 4.08pm. The epicentre of earthquake was in Faridabad at a depth of 10km."Earthquake of magnitude 3.1, occurred on October 15, 2023 at 16:08:16 IST. Lat (latitude): 28.41 & Long (longitude): 77.41, Depth: 10Km. Location: 9 km east of Faridabad, Haryana," stated the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).The earthquake was, however, mild and was felt by a few at upper floors of the high-rise societies.According to the experts the national capital lies on highly sensitive seismic zone-4 with several fault lines along Aravali, thus light tremors are often felt. A study published by Indian Academy of Science two years back had pointed out that sequences of felt tremors stoked concern when over 30 earthquakes were recorded between April and August in 2020 by the local network of NCS in Delhi-NCR. Data also shows that over 15 earthquakes originated in Delhi-NCR over about last 18 months, with highest being 3.8 magnitude in Jhajjar and a 2.7 magnitude in west Delhi in March this year. Historically the most extreme examples of earthquake in the region is that of the 1957 Bulandshahr earthquake (6.7). The region, however, has several fault lines - weak zones where tectonic plates meet causing small or non-major seismic activities.
