GURGAON: The GMDA will carry out special repair work on the 8km stretch of Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) from Ghata to Vatika Chowk at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore. The key stretch links Sohna highway with Faridabad road. The move comes after chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed the GMDA officials in August to review the redevelopment plan. The project will include overlaying of the main carriageway, repair of a junction and desilting of the drain.Earlier, a proposal was made to construct eight flyovers and widen the main carriageway to six lanes between Ghata village and NH-8, stretching over 14km. Its estimated cost was 845.5 crore, and tender has now been terminated. The metropolitan authority is also exploring the possibility of building an elevated structure between Vatika Chowk and NH-8 to provide connectivity between the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway."A fresh, DPR will be prepared for the portion between Vatika Chowk and NH-8. We will examine the feasibility of constructing the elevated structure to provide seamless connectivity between both expressways. A consultant will be appointed for the preparation of DPR, and a fresh traffic census will be carried out keeping in view new infrastructural development, including Sohna elevated road and the Dwarka Expressway," said an official."But since it is a time-consuming process, we want to provide relief to commuters on an immediate basis. We have prepared the estimate for special repairs and are awaiting its administrative approval. We will overlay the bituminous concrete layering on the stretch between Ghata village and Vatika Chowk; dense bituminous macadam will be done at the junctions. Besides, desilting of drains and painting of kerbs will be undertaken," the official added.Residents, meanwhile, are unhappy with the dawdling approach of the GMDA towards the redevelopment of SPR. "If the government had carried out regular maintenance on this road, we would not be facing such a situation now. Any repair will be a temporary solution," said Neehar Ranjan, the RWA president of BPTP Astaire Gardens.
