GHAZIABAD: A 19-year-old woman from Jharkhand who took up a guards job at a housing society in one of the citys largest townships to fund her higher studies died in Delhis Safdarjung hospital on Monday, a day after she accused a maintenance manager of sexually assaulting her in a storage room.Ajay Kumar, who is in his mid-30s, was arrested after police acted on a complaint by one of her family members, who alleged multiple people were involved in the assault. The autopsy report is awaited. DCP (rural) Vivek Yadav said they got a call from a private hospital on Sunday afternoon that a woman had been admitted there following allegations of sexual assault. She complained of acute breathlessness. "When we spoke to some of her relatives, they alleged she had been raped by the societys manager and beaten up by two others. We then registered an FIR for gang rape against the three," he added. Around 9pm on Sunday, the woman gave a written statement before a magistrate, naming only the manager. "Usne mere sath galat kam kiya (he did things that were wrong)," she scribbled on a piece of paper, unable to speak. "We arrested the maintenance manager after that," Yadav said. Late on Sunday, the woman was shifted to Safdarjung hospital after her condition deteriorated. She died during treatment on Monday morning. Originally from Jharkhands Giridih, the woman failed to continue her studies after Class 12 because of financial constraints in the family, her cousin told TOI. She came to the NCR city two months ago to find work and support her education, and landed the job of a guard at the society - which is part of the township off NH9 - around 40 days ago. Other guards told TOI that the manager would often call her to the maintenance office on the pretext of checking the attendance register. "He would flirt with her and make indecent comments," one of her colleagues said. Around 11.15am on Sunday, the guard went to the storage room on her own to fill a bottle from the water filter. "She returned after 30 minutes. She was upset and was crying, merely saying she had been wronged. All of a sudden, she became aggressive, closed the main gate and refused entry to residents," a guard said. The woman asked the other guards to call the police and said she would not open the gate until the cops arrived. "She complained of breathlessness while talking and slumped to the ground. We then took her to a nearby hospital," a guard said. Citing doctors, the police said the woman had problems in her lungs. "Her blood pressure was too high when she was brought to the hospital," DCP Yadav said. Two audio clips emerged since the womans death in the morning - one in which she purportedly narrates her ordeal to a senior and another in which the manager denies the allegations against him.In the first clip, the woman purportedly tells her colleague that the manager locked the door of the storage room when she went inside and tried to kiss her after offering her some money and a new mobile phone. Unlike the maintenance office, the storage room doesnt have any CCTV cameras. In the other clip, the accused allegedly tells his senior he was trying to take a printout when he accidentally touched the womans hand. He says he wanted to give some papers to her, which is why he asked her to stay back in the room. Asked why he locked the door from inside, the accused tells his senior he did it because he had lost some money a few days ago. In the remaining part of the audio, the manager repeats he has done no wrong and the woman should not lodge a police complaint.(The victims identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
