Condo lift with mother, son (3) has free fall from 8th floor to basement in Ghaziabad

GHAZIABAD: A 36-year-old woman and her three-year-old son had a close shave after the lift they had boarded had a free fall from the eighth floor to the basement at Prateek Grand society in Siddharth Vihar on Saturday.Holding on to her son, Gurpreet Kaur tried frantically to open the door after the lift landed with a thud, but could not. The alarms did not work either. The lift then automatically went up two storeys to the ground floor. The door opened on its own, and Gupreet and his son Nirmit came out.Although none of them suffered injuries, the incident left the mother-son duo deeply traumatised.Around 10pm on Saturday, Gurpreet and Nirmit had boarded the lift to go to the 16th floor from the ground. Two other residents who were in the lift with them got off on the eighth floor. The door closed - and the lift developed a snag. "It stopped for a few seconds, and then started to go down. The lift had a free fall from the eighth floor to the basement. My wife and son held on to themselves as it landed and shook vigorously. My wife tried to press the alarm buttons, but none were working," said Akash Deep Sharma, Gurpreets husband.Pune: Close shave for two kids as lift crashes from 10th floorTrapped, the two screamed to be saved, but no one heard them in the basement. After around 15 minutes, the lift moved up on its own and stopped on the ground floor. The door opened and the two came out.Akash questioned the maintenance agencys efforts to look into the functioning of lifts. "This is a grave cause for concern. There was no power cut, so how did the lift malfunction? The alarms werent working too. Yes, my wife and son did not suffer injuries, but they are traumatised," he added.Repeated calls to the maintenance agencys office went unanswered. Residents said the companys officials had told them the malfunction occurred because of severe voltage fluctuation. They, however, could not say why the alarms didnt work.Prateek Grand has around 2,400 flats and 2,000 families living in them.
