GHAZIABAD: The Supreme Court has directed the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation and Ghaziabad Development Authority to deposit Rs 20 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively, in an escrow account for upgrading solid waste and sewage disposal facilities in the city. The two-judge bench, comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti, directed the two agencies to make the deposits within a period of six weeks from October 9, when the order was passed. The court passed the order on a petition filed by the Confederation of Trans-Hindon RWA in 2018 over unscientific disposal of legacy waste from the Shakti Khand landfill site in Indirapuram, Kuldeep Saxena of the confederation said.On September 6 last year, a three-member bench, headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel (retd), directed the civic agencies to pay Rs 200 crore in compensation for failing to manage civic waste in the city. It had directed them to deposit the amount with the district magistrate and be utilised for remedial measures. The municipal corporation had moved the Supreme Court against the NGT order in October last year.Municipal health officer Mithilesh Kumar told TOI that in October 2021, the green tribunal had imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on GMC over the "unscientific" disposal of legacy waste from Indirapurams Shakti Khand 4 landfill site while hearing the Confederation of Trans-Hindon RWAs petition.
